Your belt speed should be 5000-7000 ft per minute to efficiently grind steel without producing a lot of heat. I have built a couple of home brewed belt grinders, a 2x48 and a 2x72. A 5hp is a bit big for those, unless it is 3phase and you are using a VFD to control the belt speed. 2hp is plenty for 72" and 1-1.5 is enough for a 48".
