Unhappy with argon/helium mix - Miller Welding Discussion ...

Tweet. #2. 02-25-2012, 06:23 AM. That is a common issue with a 50/50 mix. The argon has good cleaning and arc initiation and stability but with less thermal conductivity. The helium has poor cleaning and arc initiation and stability but has good thermal conductivity. You should only use the least amount of helium needed to produce the weld desired.

Helium versus Argon??? - Weld Talk Message Boards

It was suggested to me a good while back that Helium (as a shielding gas for TiG / MiG) would work better than Argon when welding Aluminum at thicknesses greater than 1/4 inch. The explaination given to me was that the Helium gas will generate a …

Aluminum Wheel Troubles - Welding

My plan is to pre-heat it in an oven to around 400 degrees and weld it with a argon/helium blend. 1st: I have no idea what type of aluminum this is. . .what filler rod would you recommend? Aluminum Workshop: Welding 6061-T6 without filler metal ...

Because aluminum GMAW can produce significant amounts of ozone—especially at currents of 250 amps or more—these gases, which consist of argon, helium, or standard argon-helium blends, may be worth considering, especially if you're welding in a confined space. Gas purity is another important aspect of choosing a shielding gas.

Effect of Helium Addition in Argon Shielding Gas on Metal ...

Helium is widely used as mixing with argon for a shielding gas in GMAW process of Aluminum in order to improve weld quality and increase heat transfer to the weld pool. It has been known that helium could affect metal transfer behavior; however, its behavior has not been well understood. In this study, an analysis of the metal transfer behavior in the GMAW of aluminum was studied.

Argon-Helium Gas Mix | Independently owned welding supply

Argon / Helium Mix Overview Regardless of the percentage, argon-helium mixtures are used for non-ferrous materials such as aluminum, copper, nickel alloys and reactive metals. These gases used in various combinations increase the voltage and heat of GTAW and GMAW arcs while maintaining the favorable characteristics of argon. Generally, the heavier the material the higher … Argon-Helium …

tig aluminum with Helium - Miller Welding Discussion Forums

Normaly I use straight argon or 50/50 ar/he when tiging aluminum, tried a industrial he bottle and had black on puddle and 1/4 inch on each side. I had been running 80% neg at 120 hz straight argon, as I tried to clean up the he, changed the neg side to 60% and had a half way clean puddle but still discolored on each side of weld by 1/4 inch.

Aluminum.....Argon Vs. Helium ??? - Miller Welding ...

Helium is a good gas for DCEN Aluminum welding. Which is discussed in another thread. And it is good for overhead welding since the inert Helium gas will rise to the bead, compare to Argon which will, naturally want to fall down " heavier gas".

Alum.Tig. Argon/Helium mix flow rate? - Miller Welding ...

The flow rates are higher because the helium is "lighter than air". After going back and reading several of your previous posts, the mixed gas approach made even less sense. I think you're on the right track with preheat for the 1/4" aluminum you're looking at. Don't get me wrong, an argon/helium mix does have it's place.

Why is argon and helium used in welding?

What is the greatest advantage of helium over argon? Pure argon can be used for both GMAW and GTAW welding and is the most popular of the shielding gases used for aluminum. The helium content gases are usually more expensive. Helium has a lower density than argon and higher flow rates are used when welding with helium.
