Established in 1994, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), is the main body responsible for regulating or administering environmental laws in Ghana and falls under the Ministry of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation (MESTI). The Agency was established consequent to the Environmental Protection Agency Act, 1994 (Act 490).

These Regulations, made under section 110 of the Mining Act, provide with respect to health and safety in (land) mining operations in Ghana. They also concern to a certain extent the protection of the environment and, in particular, prescribe technical and safety standards for mining operations and provide with respect to mining operation plans and mining operation permits.

The principal environmental laws applicable to the mining industry are the Environmental Protection Agency Act 1994 (Act 490) and the Environmental Assessment Regulations 1999 (LI 1652). The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is the regulatory body that administers these laws.

EPA promulgated the Ore Mining and Dressing Effluent Guidelines and Standards ( 40 CFR Part 440) in 1975, and amended the regulation in 1978, 1979, 1982 and 1988.
