An asphalt emulsion consists of three basic components, asphalt, water and an emulsifying agent. An asphalt emulsion is a stable dispersion of asphalt cement droplets in water, which can be pumped, stored and mixed with aggregates. An emulsion should "break" quickly upon contact with aggregate when mixed or after being sprayed.

Asphaltic emulsions are composed of a bituminous material uniformly emulsified with water and an emulsifying or a stabilizing agent. When asphaltic emulsions are used as a tack coat for asphalt concrete, the application rate is specified in terms of a residual rate.

USE OF ASPHALT EMULSION The first asphalt (bitumen) emulsions used in road construction were prepared in the early part of the 20th century. Today approximately 3 million tons of emulsions are produced in the United States representing about 5% to 10% of asphalt consumption. More than 8 million tons of emulsions are produced worldwide.
